Introductory Paragraph: The opening paragraph tells the reader the reason for contacting them. It’s here where you mention where you found the job posting, any mutual acquaintances, or other reasons prompting you to write. Here, you can also provide a quick overview of the experiences and skills you have to offer to the employer. In the following paragraphs is where you will more specifically go into detail on these skills.

 

Body Paragraphs: In the following paragraphs (2-3), is where you elaborate on what you have to offer the employers including any skills, knowledge, experience, qualities, characteristics, etc. that pertain to the job description.  

 

Conclusion Paragraph: Wrap up the cover letter with reiterating your interest in the position. Thank the reader for their time and acknowledge that you look forward to hearing from them or meeting with the employer.

-Use the job description as a reference to identify two to three skills and qualifications the position requires.

-Use experience from classes, co-curricular activities, clubs and student organizations, and employment that relates to the job requirement to highlight your skills and background in each area.

When writing a cover letter, it’s important to understand what the job entails. What is the position asking of you? What is the organization like? How will you be an asset to the employer? Bring into focus your unique skills, your contributions, and motivation for the position.

Market yourself

Your cover letter is extremely important. It’s your first chance to make an impression and catch the employer’s eye. Describe your strengths, interest, and skills and what makes you stand out from others.

Be unique

You want to stand out from all the other applicants. Avoid clichés and overused words and phrases. Find attributes that make you unique that will also tie back to the job position. Use an enthusiastic tone that attracts the employer’s attention and shows excitement for the position. Engaging the reader with your tone of voice and words will allow your cover letter to stand out to the employer.

Support your claims

Always back up your claims. If you say you’re a good fit for a certain position, show how this is true. If you say that you understand that goals of the company use specific examples, prior experience, or simple understanding. Always support your claims with evidence that you’ve demonstrated these skills.
